Obituary for Jean Volkmer

New Hartford -

Volkmer -The Trustees and Staff of the Museum of Modern Art mourn the loss of Jean Volkmer, founder and Chief Conservator (1958-1983) of the Conservation Department. Ms. Volkmer was trained as a graphic designer at Pratt Institute and joined MoMA in 1943 working for exhibition design. She studied conservation under Sheldon Keck and began treating paintings at MoMA in 1954 while continuing work in exhibitions and graphics... as she often said, "in those days when the museum was small we all wore a lot of hats." The fire at MoMA in 1958 lent impetus to establishing a professional conservation facility at the museum under Ms. Volkmer's direction. Her major restoration was Umberto Boccioni's masterpiece, The City Rises, one-third of which was badly charred. Ms. Volkmer leaves a meaningful legacy as a pioneering spokesperson for modern art conservation. We extend our most heartfelt sympathies to her large family, including her sister, Virginia Harty of FL, her nephew, Kevin Harty, of VT and countless students and colleagues who will always respect and cherish her humor, contributions and vision. The Board of Trustees of The Museum of Modern Art. Montano-Shea Funeral Home, New Hartford has care of the arrangements. Visit an online guestbook at
