Obituary for Susan K. Shea

SHEA – Susan K. Shea, 54, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 17, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was the devoted wife of Charles “Mike” Shea for 34 years. Born September 27, 1962 in Winsted; the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Yurashus) Kolosky.

Susan was a devoted mother and homemaker. She was happiest while cooking and spending time with her family. Susan was also a talented knitter and was usually found making gifts for others. She had a green thumb for all plants and flowers, which is reflected inside and outside of her home. Her lifelong love of Charlie Brown and all things Peanuts brought her much joy. Susan always persevered through the many obstacles in her life with a smile and determination. Anyone who met her knew she had a beautiful smile and loved to laugh. She was a kind and generous person who consistently put others before herself. She spent many years volunteering in her children's Catholic schools and was recognized by the Archdiocese of Hartford for her dedication. Susan was a passionate advocate for organ donation and always helped others who needed an organ transplant. It was her greatest wish to donate life to others, even though she was not fortunate to receive the kidney she so patiently waited for. Susan's last gift in this life was that of her tissue and corneas, so that others will now have a better life.

Susan was a devout Catholic and communicant of St. Joseph Church in Winsted, where she spent many years volunteering as a lector and catechism teacher. She had a strong faith and love for the Blessed Mother. Susan was an incredible mother, wife, and friend. Although her time with us was short, her impact was profound. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her husband, she leaves her children, Mary Shea and her husband Dwight Carlone of Avon, Alison Shea of Boston, MA and Charlie Shea, Jr. of Winsted and his girlfriend Jennifer Darby; her brother, John Kolosky and his wife Debi of Winsted; her other siblings, extended family, and many friends. She also leaves her treasured dog, Riley. She was predeceased by her beloved godparents, Beverly Bartos and Timmy Callahan.

Friends may call on Monday, September 25, 2017 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main Street, Winsted from 5 – 8 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at St. Joseph Church, Winsted at 11 AM. Burial will be private. At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Open Door Soup Kitchen, 160 Main St. Winsted, CT 06098. Susan firmly believed that no person should ever go hungry. Visit an online guestbook at
