Obituary for Leyland Donald Crouse

BARKHAMSTED - Leyland Donald Crouse, 92, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2018 at his home with his Son by his side. He was the loving and devoted husband of the late Betty E. (Beck) Crouse. Born May 25, 1925 in Petite Riviere (Green Bay) Nova Scotia, Canada; he was the youngest son of the late James “Edgar” and Eva Crouse. From his place of birth in his boy to manhood home on the farm by the sea in Green Bay, NS to the rolling forested hills of Barkhamsted, CT where he took his final breath, he truly lived a full, long and meaningful life.

Wounded and with lifelong battle scars he had served his country admirably in the Canadian Forces during war time helping the Allies defeat those Socialist Nazis in WWII Europe. He went on to work the Mersey boats out of Liverpool, NS like so many young men did, traveling back and forth from the St. Lawrence to the Gulf of Mexico. He moved his young family to Connecticut in the mid 1950’s for employment opportunity. As a Canadian working and living abroad he spent several years at Farmington Sand and Gravel then went on to put in over 40 years at The Hitchcock Chair Company in both the Riverton and New Hartford plants.

Mr. Crouse had a great passion for woodworking and was an exceptionally talented furniture maker. He enjoyed Gardening and as an avid Sportsman he loved the great outdoors, all the simple things in life and the rights afforded him even as a Canadian by the US Constitution. He loved his family deeply and was a loyal friend. Kindness, hard work, honesty, integrity, justice, truth and good clean living were of the utmost importance to him. He always looked forward to his Bi-annual trips back to his roots for several weeks at a time to Crescent Beach, NS Canada.

He is survived by his cherished son, Bernie Crouse and wife Sarah of Barkhamsted; his treasured only grandson Corey L. Crouse and wife Amy formerly of Barkhamsted and presently of Crescent Beach, NS Canada. His two beloved Granddaughters Adrienne Nash and husband Thomas, Jr., of Barkhamsted and Ashleigh Steponitis and husband David of Torrington; Great Grandchildren, Payden, Terry and Betty Crouse and Sydney and Sawyer Nash; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his son, Terry D. Crouse. Leyland was the youngest and last remaining of his many siblings. His passing now closes the chapter on his generation of the family. Words can't describe how greatly loved and missed he will be. Graveside services will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Pleasant Valley in the spring. Montano-Shea Funeral Home, Winsted has care of the arrangements. Visit the online guestbook at
