Obituary for Barbara "Bobbie" A. Nelson

Barbara A. “Bobbie” (Daly) Nelson, (78), of Barkhamsted, went home to be with the Lord on January 19, 2018. She was a caring and loving Mom with a warm smile, contagious laugh and an eternally positive and supportive spirit. She kept her great sense of humor to the end. She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Margaret (Welsh) Daly and brothers, James and David Daly. Bobbie was born in Queens, NY, grew up in Bronx, NY and moved to Highland Lake in Winsted, CT when she was a teenager. She graduated from Gilbert High School in 1958 and married her high school sweetheart and love of her life H. Thomas Nelson. To this union four children were born, Cheryl Finn (and her husband Mike of Ballwin, MO), Karen Turpin (Summerville, SC), Thomas Nelson (and his wife Rachel of Barkhamsted, CT) and Glen Nelson (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) and five grandchildren - Megan Turpin, Samantha Nelson, Abigail Nelson, Thomas Julian “TJ” Finn, and James Nelson.

Family was always her number one priority! She will always be remembered for her ever-present smile, a caring nature, readiness with a funny story and bright-eyed laughter. She only knew kindness. As a young lady, she enjoyed long walks with neighbors, trying the newest trends such as Jazzercise, paper mache, furniture refinishing, making and painting Christmas ornaments and other treasured keepsakes. She was also an avid fan of the St. Louis Blues, Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and the UConn Huskies. She enjoyed her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, musical performances and academic achievements. She enjoyed traveling with her husband to England, Italy, Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, Florida and South Carolina. She was also a lifelong reader and lover of “Large Print” library books later in her life.

She dedicated her career to helping others through her work in medical offices in St. Louis, MO, Fairfield, CT and eventually retired as Director of Operations for the New England Heart Institute in Nashua, NH.

Calling hours will be Sunday, January 28, 2018 from 1 - 3 p.m. at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 5 Steele Road, New Hartford, CT with a reception at her home immediately following. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 29, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Hope Parish, formerly Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Hartford, CT.
