Obituary for Alberta Smith

SMITH – Alberta (Gasperini) Smith, 89, long time resident of Winsted, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2018 with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her husband, Ivan Lester Smith; her parents, Peter and Agnes Gasperini; sister, Irene Masciangioli; brothers, Peter and Edward Gasperini; stepson, Orrin Smith; step grandson, William Smith; and grandson, Joshua LeJeune. Better known as “Bert,” she attended St. Mary’s School and graduated class of ’46 from New Britain High. She performed secretarial duties at North & Judd, Hudson Wire Factory and Sonitrol Security Systems of New Britain; eventually becoming Vice President and Co-Owner of Sonitrol with her husband. After his passing in 1985, she retired. Home varied from Southington, CT to S. Sandisfield, MA. She ventured to Yokohama, Japan and taught English for 2 years, later returning to the states, settling in Winsted, CT in 1964. A great deal of time was also spent in the beautiful Champlain Islands of VT. Alberta had many passions; an excellent cook who served delicious meals and treats of all kinds with family and friends. She loved gardening flowers and vegetables and sharing some of her homemade jams and pickles. If she wasn’t trying to beat you in a game of Scrabble or cribbage, you could find her reading novels and historical works or glued to the set watching UCONN girls or the Patriots. In her younger years, she was active in badminton, roller skating or bowling for a duck-pin league. She also taught Sunday school for a number of years at St. James Episcopal Church. She shall be missed by many at the Glen Senior Housing and others who were influenced, trained, taught or shared in her journey of 89 plus years. She is survived by sister, Paula Shamou of MI; stepson, Dr. Charles E. Smith of Montreal; daughter, Leslie LeJeune, son-in-law, David and grandson, Andrew LeJeune, all of Marborough, CT; son, David Smith of Austin, CO; grandson, Matthew LeJeune and wife Laura and their two sons, James and Wesley of Portland, CT; step daughter-in-law, Oralia Smith; step granddaughter, Elizabeth Smith Woody and her two sons, William and Samuel, all of TX; step great granddaughter, Katie Smith of CA; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Burial will be privately held at the convenience of the family. Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main Street, Winsted has care of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, her request was for donations to go to either: Foothills VNA, 32 Union Street, Winsted, CT 06098 or Chores Helping Hands, PO Box 888, Winsted, CT 06098. Both agencies were great help to her. Visit an online guestbook at
